Foreword
By Georg Streif (World Tournament Medalist, Olympic Medal Coach in Taekwondo)
Taekwondo is far more than just a combat sport – it is a martial art and a school of life.
It teaches us discipline, respect, and the relentless drive to keep improving. These values accompany us not only on the mat but also in everyday life.
Tykie: The Taekwondo Kid by Jürgen Knees – “bonn Shido” takes us on an inspiring journey. Tyki, a curious and brave young boy, takes his first steps into the world of Taekwondo. He faces challenges, grows through his experiences, and discovers that true strength is not just about physical power but also about patience, perseverance, and teamwork – the essence of the Do.
As someone who has practiced and taught Taekwondo for many decades, I know how important it is to inspire young people to follow the right path. This book tells an engaging and child-friendly story that highlights what makes Taekwondo so special – and why it goes far beyond just being a sport.
I wish all readers great joy in following Tyki’s journey and hope they take as much from it as I have from my own Taekwondo experience.
With best sporting regards,
Georg Streif

Tykie: Chapter 1 – The New White Belt
Tykie sat nervously on the wooden bench at the edge of the large gym. His heart was pounding so loudly that he was sure the other kids could hear it. In front of him, a group of students practiced different movements that looked both impressive and intimidating. Their white uniforms—doboks, as the instructor called them—rustled with every motion. The black belts some of them wore seemed to almost glow.
„Are you ready, Tykie?“ his mother asked, smiling encouragingly beside him. „You’re going to like this. You’ve always wanted to try a sport where you can move around.“
Tykie nodded uncertainly. He had chosen Taekwondo because he had dreamed of being as brave and strong as the heroes in his favorite movies. But now that he was here, he felt small and unsure.
A friendly man with short gray hair and a black belt around his waist approached him. „Hello, you must be Tykie! I’m Master Kim. Welcome to your first Taekwondo class.“

Tykie stood up and nodded shyly. „Hello, Master Kim.“
„You don’t need to be nervous,“ Master Kim said with a warm smile. „Everyone here started as a beginner—just like you. Today, you’ll learn the basics. We’ll start with something simple: respect.“
„Respect?“ Tykie repeated, surprised.
„Yes,“ Master Kim said. „In Taekwondo, everything begins and ends with respect. Watch this—this is what we do before we start training.“ He stood straight, placed his hands at his sides, and bowed slightly. „This shows that we appreciate others and ourselves.“
Tykie tried to copy him. „Like this?“
„Perfect!“ Master Kim praised. „Come on, I’ll introduce you to the others.“
The other kids welcomed Tykie kindly, and soon he found himself in a small group learning the first movements. Master Kim explained how to stand firmly and how to perform simple punches and kicks.
„Remember,“ Master Kim said, „it’s not about being strong or fast. It’s about staying focused and never giving up.“
Tykie practiced the basic punch he had just learned. At first, it felt awkward, but with each repetition, he grew more confident. „Good stance, Tykie!“ Master Kim praised.
By the end of the class, Tykie was exhausted but proud. He had not only learned the basic punch but also understood the importance of respecting himself and others.
As Master Kim ended the lesson with one final bow, Tykie felt that he had taken an important step. The white belt he wore wasn’t just a sign that he was a beginner—it was the start of a journey he would never forget.
On the way home, Tykie excitedly told his mother about everything he had learned. „I thought it was just a sport,“ he said, „but it feels like something much bigger.“
His mother smiled. „It is, Tykie. And I know you’re going to grow from this.“
That night, Tykie fell asleep with a smile. He knew this was just the beginning—the beginning of an adventure that would make him strong, brave, and full of respect for himself and others.

Chapter 2: The First Challenge
The following week, Tykie was already feeling a little more comfortable in his Taekwondo group. Every Tuesday and Thursday, he put on his white dobok, carefully tied his new white belt, and headed to the gym. But today, something felt different.
„Today, we’re doing something special,“ Master Kim announced as the children lined up. „You will learn how to handle a practice sparring match.“
A practice sparring match? Tykie’s heart started beating faster. He had watched the other kids practicing kicks and punches on pads, but against a real opponent? That suddenly felt very serious.
„Don’t worry,“ Master Kim added. „We will practice slowly and safely. This is not about winning—it’s about learning. Stay calm, focus on your technique, and remember: respect for your partner comes first.“
Master Kim began calling out pairs. Tykie was matched with an older boy named Marco, who already had a yellow belt. Marco was taller and looked very confident, but he smiled kindly.
„Hey, Tykie,“ Marco said. „No need to be nervous. I’ll take it easy, okay?“

Tykie nodded, even though his stomach was still fluttering. He got into the stance Master Kim had taught them and waited for the command.
„Begin!“ Master Kim called out.
Marco moved quickly, throwing a light kick that Tykie barely managed to block. „Nice job,“ Marco said encouragingly. „Now it’s your turn!“
Tykie took a deep breath and attempted a kick he had learned in training. It wasn’t perfect, but Marco skillfully dodged it. „Not bad! But try to keep your balance better,“ Marco advised.
With each attempt, Tykie grew more confident. He started focusing on his own movements instead of worrying about what Marco might do next. Finally, he landed a clean block, followed by a kick that caught Marco by surprise.
„Wow, that was good!“ Marco said, laughing. „You’ve got talent.“
After the practice match, Master Kim praised the whole group. „You all did great. Remember, making mistakes is okay. What matters is that you keep trying and keep learning.“
That evening, as Tykie walked home, he felt like a real Taekwondo student for the first time. He had faced his fear and learned something new.
At home, he excitedly told his mom all about the practice match. „Marco was really nice,“ Tykie said, „and I think I’m getting better. It’s like… a little adventure every time.“
His mom smiled. „That’s the spirit of Taekwondo, Tykie. It’s not just about getting stronger—it’s about becoming braver.“
That night, Tykie thought about the lesson of the day: Every challenge, big or small, begins with taking the first step—and believing that you can do it.
